Vacuole in a plant cell:

2 2008 AIPMT Cell: The Unit of LifeVacuoles Easy
Vacuole in a plant cell:
A lacks membrane and contains air
B lacks membrane and contains water and excretory substances
C is membrane-bound and contains storage proteins and lipids
D is membrane-bound and contains water and excretory substances

Detailed Solution

The vacuole is a membrane-bound space found in the cytoplasm.
It is bounded by a single membrane called the tonoplast.
It contains water, sap, excretory products and other materials not useful for the cell.
In plant cells the vacuole can occupy up to 90 percent of the volume of the cell.
The tonoplast facilitates the transport of a number of ions and other materials against concentration gradients into the vacuole, so their concentration is higher in the vacuole than in the cytoplasm.
A vacuole is never without a membrane, and it is not mainly a store of proteins and lipids.
So the vacuole in a plant cell is membrane-bound and contains water and excretory substances.
