Animals excrete nitrogenous wastes as ammonia (ammonotelism), urea (ureotelism) or uric acid (uricotelism). Uric acid is almost insoluble in water and can be excreted as a paste or pellets with very little water loss. Animals that live where water must be conserved are uricotelic: birds, reptiles (lizards, snakes), land snails and insects. Bony fishes and freshwater protozoans are ammonotelic; frogs and toads (adults) and mammals are ureotelic. So uricotelism is found in birds, reptiles and insects.
