Smooth muscles are uninucleate and involuntary; skeletal muscle fibres are multinucleate and bundled in parallel. Gap junctions at the intercalated discs of cardiac muscle allow the cells to contract as a unit. Blood vessel walls are lined by simple squamous epithelium.
