In osmosis, water flows through a semipermeable membrane from pure water into a solution. If a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure is applied on the solution side, the flow is reversed: water is pushed out of the solution through the membrane, leaving the salts behind. This is reverse osmosis. It is used in desalination plants to get pure (drinking) water from sea water. So pure water can be obtained from sea water by reverse osmosis.
