2002 AIPMT Some Basic Concepts of ChemistryMolarity on Mixing Solutions Easy Question 43 of 49 in Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

1 M and 2.5 litre NaOH solution mixed with another 0.5 M and 3 litre NaOH solution. Then find out molarity of resultant solution : -

A 0.80 M
B 1.0 M
C 0.73 M
D 0.50 M

The answer is C.

Solution

Moles of NaOH in the first solution: $M_1V_1 = 1 \times 2.5 = 2.5$ mol
Moles in the second solution: $M_2V_2 = 0.5 \times 3 = 1.5$ mol
Total moles $= 4.0$ mol; total volume $= 2.5 + 3 = 5.5$ L
$M = \dfrac{M_1V_1 + M_2V_2}{V_1 + V_2} = \dfrac{4.0}{5.5} = 0.73$ M
