Zener diode is used for :-
A
Rectification
B
Stabilisation
C
Amplification
D
Producing oscillations in an oscillator
Detailed Solution
A Zener diode is a heavily doped p-n junction diode designed to operate in the reverse breakdown region.
In the breakdown region, the voltage across the Zener diode remains almost constant (equal to the Zener voltage $V_Z$) even when the current through it changes over a large range.
So when it is connected in reverse bias across a load (with a series resistor), any change in the input voltage changes only the current, while the output voltage across the load stays constant.
This is why the Zener diode is used as a voltage regulator, i.e. for stabilisation of voltage.
Rectification is done by ordinary p-n junction diodes, while amplification and oscillation are done with transistors.
So a Zener diode is used for stabilisation.
