2004 AIPMT BiomoleculesProteins and their Functions Easy Question 47 of 67 in Biomolecules

The correct statement in respect of protein haemoglobin is that it :-

A Maintains blood sugar level
B Acts as an oxygen carrier in the blood
C Forms antibodies and offers resistance to diseases
D Functions as a catalyst for biological reactions

The answer is B.

Solution

Haemoglobin is a globular protein present in red blood cells. It contains four polypeptide chains, each with an iron-containing haem group.
The $Fe^{2+}$ of haem binds oxygen reversibly to form oxyhaemoglobin in the lungs, and releases it in the tissues.
So haemoglobin acts as an oxygen carrier in the blood.
Blood sugar level is maintained by the hormone insulin (and glucagon); antibodies are formed by immunoglobulins; biological reactions are catalysed by enzymes.
