Consider the statements given below regarding contraception and answer as directed thereafter:
(i) Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) during first trimester is generally safe
(ii) Generally chances of conception are nil until mother breast-feeds the infant upto two years
(iii) Intrauterine devices like copper-T are effective contraceptives
(iv) Contraception pills may be taken upto one week after coitus to prevent conception
Which two of the above statements are correct?
A (i), (iii)
B (i), (ii)
C (ii), (iii)
D (iii), (iv)

Detailed Solution

(i) is correct: MTPs are considered relatively safe during the first trimester, i.e. up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Second trimester abortions are much more risky.
(iii) is correct: intrauterine devices such as Copper-T are among the most widely accepted and effective methods of contraception in India. They increase the phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus, and the Cu ions released suppress sperm motility and their fertilising capacity.
(ii) is not correct: lactational amenorrhoea is effective only as long as the mother breast-feeds the child fully, and it has been reported to be effective only up to a maximum period of six months following parturition, not two years.
(iv) is not correct: emergency contraceptive pills are effective only if taken within 72 hours of coitus, not up to one week.
So the two correct statements are (i) and (iii).
