-
There are four light-weight-rod samples A, B, C, D separately suspended by threads. A bar magnet is slowly brought near each sample and the following observations are noted
(i) A is feebly repelled
(ii) B is feebly attracted
(iii) C is strongly attracted
(iv) D remains unaffected
Which one of the following is true?A diamagnetic material is feebly repelled by a magnet, so A is diamagnetic (not non-magnetic).
A paramagnetic material is feebly attracted by a magnet, so B is paramagnetic.
A ferromagnetic material is strongly attracted by a magnet, so C is ferromagnetic (not diamagnetic).
D is unaffected, so it is non-magnetic (not ferromagnetic).
Hence the true statement is that B is of a paramagnetic material.

The magnetic moment of a diamagnetic atom isIn a diamagnetic atom all the electrons are paired.
The orbital and spin magnetic moments of the electrons in each pair are equal and opposite, so they cancel completely.
The resultant (net) magnetic moment of the atom is therefore zero in the absence of an external field.
A small moment opposite to the field is induced only when an external field is applied, which is why such substances are feebly repelled.
Hence the magnetic moment of a diamagnetic atom is equal to zero.
