Why is vivipary an undesirable character for annual crop plants -Vivipary is the germination of seeds while they are still attached to the parent plant, without any period of dormancy (as in mangroves such as Rhizophora).
In crop plants, vivipary means that the seeds start germinating on the plant itself, for example in a wet harvest season (pre-harvest sprouting).
Such seeds have no dormancy, so they cannot be dried and stored under normal conditions until the next sowing season.
Annual crops are raised from seeds every season, so the inability to store the seed is a serious drawback; the sprouted grain also loses its quality.
Vivipary is the opposite of long dormancy, and it does not reduce plant vigour or fertility.
So vivipary is undesirable because the seeds cannot be stored under normal conditions for the next season.
